A Block Island Getaway

Have a hankering for a quick weekend getaway where you can relax, unwind, and smell fresh, salty air? An idyllic and not-too-far-away place that’s only six miles long by three miles wide exists, and it’s called Block Island. Gentle breezes (bring sweatshirts!), a laid-back atmosphere, fresh seafood, and many options for quiet solitude are waiting for you. I hope you enjoy the photos and must-see ideas from my recent trip! Cheers, Lora

Getting there…

Boats and I don’t get along too well, so my hubs and I drove to Westerly, RI (about 2 hours from Danbury) to fly to the Block with New England Airlines. Right up my alley; time efficient – only a 12 minute flight!

Those views though…

Everywhere you turn on BI is simply stunning. Bring a camera and go explore!

There’s a new discovery at every turn.

Settlers Rock and the North Lighthouse

At the very north point of BI sits the appropriately named, North Lighthouse. The granite structure, built in 1867, was automated in 1956, then discontinued in 1973. It was relit in 2010 with a white fresnel light. It’s gorgeous, serene, and worth the walk along the beach to get to it.

Mohegan Bluffs

Getting your cardio in at Mohegan Bluffs is easy! Just head down the 141 steps, walk along the beach, then climb those steps on your way back up! We watched some people spear fishing, others playing volleyball, a newly engaged couple strolling along, and we did some beachcombing ourselves to find the perfect rock – we always snag one from every vacation we go on.

According to Block Island Tourism, Mohegan Bluffs got its name from a “Native American battle dating to 1590, where 40 members of a Mohegan raiding party were said to have been driven off the cliffs to their deaths by the Manisseans, the victorious natives of the island.”

Southeast Lighthouse

The Southeast Lighthouse is aptly named due to being located on the southeast side of the island, and is just as lovely as the North Lighthouse. It was built in 1875, deactivated in 1990, and relit in 1994. Right near the bluffs, it’s a nice spot for a picnic or just to chill on the property. They also offer guided tours to the top for only $10 per person!

Other cool things to see/do…

  • Flaming coffees at The 1661 Inn (and a great place to stay too!)
  • For a fabulous dinner, def go to Winfield’s…amazing
  • Casual seafood? lunch/drinks head to Dead Eye Dick’s
  • Drink Block Island Mudslides at The Oar (their specialty!) overlooking the Great Salt Pond
  • Go for a short hike (perfect for kids too) at Hodge Family Wildlife Preserve (there are 28 miles of walking trails that are free of charge and open to the public)
  • Bring the kids to the Abrams Animal Farm and see exotic animals! We loved Nyla the camel and Mr. McDuff, the Scottish Highland steer!
  • For your morning ☕️ and light breakfast, you must go to Persephone’s Kitchen
  • Ice cream? Of course. Stop at The Ice Cream Place – fresh whipped cream!
  • Seventeen miles of beaches and all free and open to the public

And of course, BI clothing is required…

Our favorite store for BI tees and sweatshirts (and salt water taffy!) is Star Department store on Water Street – in business for 55 years!

We’d love to see your Block Island pics, so go ahead and tag us if you head there this summer!
